Immigration

Immigration law encompasses U.S. citizenship, the authorization of individuals from other countries to live and work in the United States and the loss of citizenship and/or deportation of those who entered the United States illegally.

U.S. Immigration laws offer foreign nationals an opportunity to live and work in the United States. An individual may seek permission to enter the U.S. on a temporary or permanent basis, depending on their unique circumstances.

Legal immigration involves persons called immigrants, also referred to as Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR). In order to reside permanently in the U.S. one must petition for a permanent residence card or what is commonly called a "green card."

Any person seeking to enter the U. S. to visit or work for a short period of time is referred to as a non-immigrant. Once a temporary visa has expired, a non-immigrant may seek to extend their stay in the U.S., change to a different non-immigrant status or petition for immigrant visa status. Also covered in the broad scope of immigration is citizenship, naturalization, political or religious asylum.
